Mexico's mining production rose 17% in January from the same month a year earlier, with top metals like copper, gold and silver showing double-digit rises.
The National Statistics Institute, or Inegi, said that copper production rose 42% from January 2010 to 26,891 tons. The Cananea copper mine resumed production in the second half of last year after being closed for three years because of a dispute between the mine operator, Grupo Mexico SAB (GMEXICO.MX), and the miners' union.
Mexico's silver production increased by 16% in January from a year earlier to 268,612 kilograms, while gold production rose 26% to 5,614 kilograms.
Lead production was up by 46% to 10,825 tons, and zinc output fell 12% to 31,494 tons, Inegi said. Iron production edged lower by 3.4% to 671,742 tons, and coal production was 56% higher to 1.27 million tons.
