Two Tanzanian Projects, One Push
Lake Victoria Gold Ltd. (LVG:TSX.V; LVGLF:OTCQB; E1K:FSE) is moving its wholly owned Imwelo gold project in Tanzania toward first gold production while preparing a substantially larger drilling program at its nearby Tembo project, according to an October 20 release.
Imwelo, which the company describes as fully permitted for mine construction and production, lies west of AngloGold Ashanti Plc's (AU:NYSE; ANG:JSE) Geita gold mine. Tembo sits next to Barrick Mining Corp.'s (ABX:TSX; B:NYSE) Bulyanhulu mine.
The company plans a larger, sustained drilling program at Tembo focused on growing and upgrading its recently announced resource and testing new targets. It is also pursuing a proposed toll milling arrangement with Nyati Resources that could provide a path to early gold production, though no definitive agreement has been signed.
"The recent maiden Mineral Resource Estimate at Tembo provides the foundation for a much larger exploration effort," President and Chief Executive Officer Marc Cernovitch said. "We see clear opportunities to expand our existing deposits, and we have a deep pipeline of additional targets that warrant systematic testing."
More Than Money
To fund the work, Lake Victoria Gold has signed a non-binding term sheet with HOB Energy FZCO, a Dubai-based company owned by Ozcan Halaç, which would buy 90,733,960 shares at CA$0.30 each for about CA$27.2 million. A separate offering of up to CA$5 million to certain existing significant shareholders would bring the total to as much as about CA$32.2 million. Proceeds would go toward developing Imwelo to first gold production and expanding drilling at Tembo.
After closing, HOB would own about 29.17% of the company on a non-diluted basis and could appoint up to three of seven directors. It would also be able to name a chief operating officer, and the two companies would set up a joint technical steering committee. Closing is expected by November 30 and depends on a definitive agreement, approval from disinterested shareholders, TSX Venture Exchange approval, and other conditions.
"The Halaç family's multi-generational experience across the gold value chain brings far more than capital to LVG," Cernovitch said.
Executive Chairman and Chief Financial Officer Simon Benstead added, "This is not simply a financing: it pairs substantial development and exploration capital with HOB's gold-sector experience and its technical and commercial capabilities."
Shovels in the Ground
Work is already underway at Imwelo. The company began Phase 1 earthworks in July, upgrading the access road, preparing the plant site, and building a construction camp. In September, it completed the statutory disclosure stage of a third land program for accommodation, workshop, and other site infrastructure.
Atrium Research analyst Ben Pirie reiterated a Buy rating and CA$0.65 price target on Lake Victoria Gold.
Later that month, the company identified a preferred processing route for clay-rich near-surface material at Imwelo's Area C: attrition scrubbing followed by desliming. In testwork, that lifted leach recoveries on the treated material to about 85% to 88%, though the company noted these are not yet whole-plant recoveries. Taifa Mining, whose parent Taifa Group has agreed to take an equity stake in Lake Victoria Gold, will handle contract mining and civil works.
At Tembo, more than 50,000 meters of drilling led to a maiden resource estimate in August of 99,700 ounces of gold indicated, from 2.69 million tonnes grading 1.16 grams per tonne (g/t), and 480,100 ounces inferred, from 13.3 million tonnes at 1.12 g/t, across three near-surface deposits.
Most of it sits in the Ngula 1 deposit, which will be the focus of at least 4,000 meters of close-spaced drilling.
A Win in the Lab, With a Caveat
Two analysts weighed in on Imwelo's metallurgical testwork after the company announced its preferred processing route on September 24.
Atrium Research analyst Ben Pirie reiterated a Buy rating and CA$0.65 price target on Lake Victoria Gold in a September 24 note, calling the results an important step for Imwelo.
"Notably, today's positive metallurgical testwork was performed on near-surface ore at Area C, which is currently the planned initial mining area," he wrote. "By largely derisking the processing portion of this mining phase, we are more confident in LVG's ability to bring this operation into production with limited issues."
Red Cloud Securities analyst Alina Islam called the headline results positive in a September 25 note but flagged a possible complication. She noted that "the head grade of the pretreated material dropped from 3.80 g/t Au to 2.87 g/t Au, implying ~25% of the gold is reporting to the slimes."
Islam said Imwelo's nuggety gold could have distorted the head grades, but that the results suggest "a separate slimes treatment circuit may be required, adding capital and complexity to a US$15M build, especially as Area C is the first to be mined."
"That said, it is better to identify and address these issues in the lab than at commissioning, and we look forward to seeing additional test results," she wrote.
Goldman Bets on Gold
Gold traded at about US$4,138 per ounce on October 20, below its January record of about US$5,590, but Goldman still expects it to climb.
In September, the bank reiterated its US$5,400 per ounce target for the end of 2027, Investinglive reported. It trimmed its end-2026 forecast to US$4,650, saying tighter U.S. monetary policy "changes the timing rather than the destination."
Goldman credited central banks for nearly all of its expected gain through 2027. It estimates they are buying about 90 tonnes of gold a month, compared with an average of 17 tonnes before 2022.
Tanzania, home to Lake Victoria Gold's projects, is benefiting. Gold exports rose 37.4% to about US$5.67 billion in the year ended July 2026 and made up 47.4% of the country's goods export earnings, according to the Bank of Tanzania's Monthly Economic Review, as reported by TanzaniaInvest.
