Erdene Reports US$51 Million in Quarterly Revenue and US$20 Million Debt Repayment at Bayan Khundii
Erdene Resource Development (ERD:TSX; ERDCF:OTCQX; ERDN:MSE) reported US$51 million in gross revenue from gold and silver sales at its Bayan Khundii Gold Mine in Mongolia during the third quarter ended September 30, 2026. The mine is operated by Erdene Mongol LLC, the company's 50:50 joint venture with Mongolian Mining Corporation (0975:HK).
During the quarter, Bayan Khundii processed 164,000 tonnes of ore, averaging 1,788 tonnes per day. The average processed gold grade was 2.3 grams per tonne, while gold recoveries averaged 96%. EM sold 11,853 ounces of gold and 3,046 ounces of silver at average prices of US$4,315 and US$62 per ounce, respectively.
The joint venture also repaid an additional US$20 million in debt during the quarter, reducing its outstanding balance to US$93 million.
"Gold production in Q3 was slightly ahead of production from the second quarter as operating performance continues to improve," Erdene President and CEO Peter Akerley stated in the company's October 19 news release. "Continued strong cashflow from operations allowed EM to repay a further US$20 million of debt."
Bayan Khundii commenced gold production in September 2025 and achieved commercial production during the first quarter of 2026. According to Erdene's September 2026 corporate presentation, the mine's 650,000-tonne-per-year carbon-in-pulp processing plant was constructed over 22 months at a cost of US$120 million.
During the first half of 2026, the operation sold 20,236 ounces of gold and 6,452 ounces of silver, generating US$95 million in gross project revenue. Gold recoveries averaged 96%, exceeding the company's forecast of 93%.
Erdene also provided an update on its wholly owned Zuun Mod Molybdenum-Copper Project in southwestern Mongolia, following the October 14 release of an independent preliminary economic assessment (PEA).
The assessment outlined a conventional open-pit mining operation with an estimated 34-year mine life, producing approximately 672.1 million pounds of molybdenum and 947.2 million pounds of copper. Average annual recovered production was estimated at 19.8 million pounds of molybdenum and 27.9 million pounds of copper, with a processing plant designed for 25 million tonnes annually.
Under base-case commodity prices of US$25 per pound of molybdenum and US$5 per pound of copper, the PEA estimated an after-tax net present value at an 8% discount rate of US$745.1 million and an internal rate of return of 16.1%.
At spot-price assumptions of US$33 per pound of molybdenum and US$6.50 per pound of copper, the estimated after-tax net present value increased to approximately US$1.98 billion, with an internal rate of return of 27.8%. The corresponding estimated payback periods were six and four production years, respectively.
Initial capital expenditures were estimated at US$686.8 million, including US$176.7 million in contingency, while sustaining capital was estimated at US$462.6 million over the mine life. The assessment estimated all-in sustaining costs of US$13.89 per pound of molybdenum, incorporating credits from copper production.
The PEA also estimated base-case life-of-mine undiscounted revenue of approximately US$21.43 billion and free cash flow of US$4.99 billion.
"This PEA confirms Zuun Mod as one of the world's premier undeveloped resources of molybdenum," Akerley stated in the company's October 14 news release. "The project is underpinned by a low-strip-ratio open pit, located 35 kilometers from our Bayan Khundii Gold Mine and approximately 200 kilometers from the border with China, the world's largest consumer of molybdenum and copper."
The assessment incorporated an updated mineral resource estimate prepared by SLR Advisory Asia Limited, effective May 1, 2026. At a cutoff grade of 0.025% molybdenum, measured and indicated resources totaled 407.1 million tonnes containing approximately 427 million pounds of molybdenum and 553.7 million pounds of copper. Inferred resources totaled 596.2 million tonnes containing approximately 536.8 million pounds of molybdenum and 733.3 million pounds of copper.
The company cautioned that the PEA is preliminary and incorporates inferred mineral resources, which are not mineral reserves and have not demonstrated economic viability. Approximately 74% of the forecast plant feed is derived from inferred resources, and there is no certainty that the assessment's projected results will be realized.
Copper Market Sees Price Increase on Strong China Data
In its report titled "Copper Rises Amid Strong China Data," the publication noted that China's economy expanded 4.5% in the third quarter, compared with 4.3% in the second quarter, exceeding expectations of 4.4%. Industrial production increased 5.5% year over year in September, surpassing forecasts of 5.4%. Copper prices also received support from supply disruptions in Chile, where labor strikes and adverse weather affected mining operations.
Trading Economics reported that demand had been supported by data center infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing, and battery energy storage systems. The publication described copper as "one of the most widely used industrial metals in the world" and highlighted its applications in construction, electronics, power generation, and renewable energy systems. Copper was quoted at US$6.5311 per pound, representing a 30.28% increase over the preceding year.
Gold Prices Rebound as Interest Rate Expectations and Safe-Haven Demand Shape the Market
Gold prices recovered ground on October 19 as investors weighed U.S. interest rate expectations, Treasury yields, and geopolitical uncertainty. According to Trading Economics, gold climbed above US$4,170 per ounce following remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh that prompted traders to reduce expectations of an October interest rate increase.
Paydirt Prospector maintained its Buy recommendation, with the writers pointing to further gold production improvements, resource conversion, engineering work, and potential strategic partnerships as developments relevant to the company's projects.
Trading Economics reported that Warsh's comments at the International Monetary Fund's annual meetings in Bangkok had not indicated an outcome for the October 27-28 Federal Open Market Committee meeting.
The report noted that markets assigned an approximately 84% probability to interest rates remaining unchanged in October.
Gold also benefited from safe-haven demand amid concerns about artificial intelligence-related investments, an equity market selloff, and declining bond yields. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, along with protests in several European countries, contributed to broader market uncertainty.
Low wrote that "Gold is finding its footing again, but a sustained breakout will likely depend on whether the bond market plays along." He identified the US$4,100 level as an important area of price support and noted that gold had maintained a recovery from the latter part of the previous week.
Low also highlighted the relationship between gold and U.S. Treasury yields. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield had declined toward 5.06%, providing some relief for the non-yielding precious metal. However, he noted that yields had remained above 5%, while stronger-than-expected U.S. inflation readings had continued to influence expectations for Federal Reserve policy. According to the analysis, futures markets had priced in approximately 90% odds of another interest rate increase in December.
The publication quoted Saxo Bank analysts, who stated, "The market remains caught in a tug of war between short-term selling pressure from macro-focused traders and demand from less interest-rate-sensitive investors seeking a safe haven amid multiple geopolitical and fiscal tensions."
The same report cited a note from Commonwealth Bank of Australia's Trent Saunders, who drew attention in the gold market to the prospect of further Federal Reserve interest rate increases following stronger-than-expected U.S. inflation data.
Paydirt Prospector Sees Added Value in Zuun Mod PEA, Maintain Buy Rating
In an October 15 edition of Paydirt Prospector, Jeff Clark, Daniel Flynn, and Sharyn Alexander examined Erdene Resource Development Corp.'s preliminary economic assessment for its Zuun Mod molybdenum-copper project in Mongolia. They described the study as a "de-risking event" for the company's secondary asset, highlighting its base-case after-tax net present value of US$745 million, which increased to approximately US$2 billion under spot-price assumptions. They also noted the project's estimated 34-year mine life, annual production projections of 19.8 million pounds of molybdenum and 27.9 million pounds of copper, and an increase in measured and indicated resources from 271 million tonnes to 407 million tonnes.
However, the writers identified several considerations, including the 16.1% base-case internal rate of return, estimated initial capital expenditures of US$687 million, and the inclusion of inferred resources in approximately 74% of planned mill feed. They cautioned that the project's estimated net present value did not translate directly into Erdene's market capitalization, given its capital requirements, development timeline, and preliminary stage.
"But it does give the market something much more tangible to value," they wrote. The publication maintained its Buy recommendation, with the writers pointing to further gold production improvements, resource conversion, engineering work, and potential strategic partnerships as developments relevant to the company's projects.
Fourth-Quarter Drilling, Gold Mine Expansion, and Zuun Mod Development
Erdene Resources has outlined approximately 16,000 meters of fourth-quarter drilling across its Khundii Minerals District in Mongolia, using three drilling rigs to investigate gold, copper, and molybdenum targets. The programs include work at Bayan Khundii West, Dark Horse–Altan Arrow, and Zuun Mod–Khuvyn Khar, as well as geophysical surveys and additional technical studies.
At Bayan Khundii, mining is expected to advance into higher-grade zones during the fourth quarter as pit expansion progresses, with stronger gold production expected during the period. Separately, Erdene's September 2026 corporate presentation identifies a target of more than 75,000 ounces of annual gold production from Bayan Khundii during 2026–2030.
The company has also outlined a broader Khundii expansion program spanning 2026 through 2028. Planned activities include developing additional reserves, evaluating processing plant expansion, and advancing toward an investment decision. The September presentation sets out multiple long-term expansion objectives: one slide targets exceeding 100,000 ounces of annual gold production, while another targets 50,000 to 100,000 ounces annually through 2040. These are development targets rather than guaranteed production outcomes.
Approximately 9,000 meters of fourth-quarter drilling is planned west of the Bayan Khundii open pit. The program is intended to test the continuity of high-grade gold zones and investigate mineralization beyond the planned pit limits.
A further 3,000 meters of drilling is planned at Dark Horse–Altan Arrow, targeting extensions of oxide-hosted gold mineralization within the upper 100 meters of the mineralized structure. The work will support Erdene's evaluation of heap-leach processing viability and test additional targets identified during recent Canada-Mongolia GeoSymposium field visits. Erdene's September presentation indicates that mining at Dark Horse is planned to begin in 2027 as part of the broader Bayan Khundii operation.
Erdene has also planned approximately 4,000 meters of drilling across Zuun Mod and the adjacent Khuvyn Khar copper prospect. At Zuun Mod, the program will test near-surface mineralization and extensions around existing resource blocks. At Khuvyn Khar, initial drilling will investigate shallow copper targets, while deeper targets are planned for testing in 2027 using results from an ongoing geophysical program.
The company has engaged Quantec Geoscience Ltd. to conduct an ORION 3D direct-current induced-polarization (DCIP) and magnetotelluric (MT) survey over the Zuun Mod–Khuvyn Khar license area. The survey comprises 17 lines, each six kilometers long and spaced 400 meters apart, for a total of 102 line-kilometers.
The program is designed to provide three-dimensional resistivity and chargeability imaging to depths exceeding 600 meters, helping map faults, fractures, alteration zones, and other geological features. Results are expected to help refine the geological model and prioritize copper drilling targets at Khuvyn Khar, as well as targets associated with extensions of the Zuun Mod deposit.
Previous drilling at Khuvyn Khar identified copper and silver mineralization. Hole ZMD-121 intersected 34 meters grading 1.30% copper and 9.24 grams per tonne silver, starting at a downhole depth of 308 meters. Hole ZMD-162 intersected 30 meters grading 1.25% copper and 6.1 grams per tonne silver.
During 2027, Erdene plans additional drilling at Zuun Mod to support the conversion of inferred mineral resources to measured and indicated categories, initially focusing on areas scheduled for mining during the first five years of the preliminary economic assessment (PEA) mine plan.
Following completion of the PEA, the company has advanced engineering, environmental, and hydrogeological work. Planned value-engineering activities include obtaining competitive equipment quotations, including from Asian suppliers, and examining mining productivity, haulage arrangements, power requirements, and reagent consumption.
Additional testwork will evaluate tailings thickening, water recovery, and tailings storage facility design. Erdene also plans to continue assessing grid-connected and dedicated power supply options during the next technical study phase.
Erdene has commenced discussions with potential partners regarding offtake agreements, financing, and strategic partnership structures for Zuun Mod. Its September 2026 presentation identified a target investment decision in 2028. The company's October 2026 PEA subsequently outlined a 34-year mine life, with average annual recovered production of approximately 19.8 million pounds of molybdenum and 27.9 million pounds of copper. These figures represent the PEA's production outlook and are not a guarantee of future output.
Beyond Bayan Khundii and Zuun Mod, Erdene's September presentation outlines additional development work at Altan Nar, Ulaan, and Tereg Uul.
At Altan Nar, the company identified resource development, metallurgical testing, exploration planning, and feasibility work during the 2026–2028 period. Its development plan targets an investment decision by 2028 and annual production of 75,000 to 100,000 gold-equivalent ounces during 2029–2040.
The Altan Nar mineralized corridor extends approximately 5.6 kilometers by 1.5 kilometers and contains more than 20 identified target areas. Erdene has identified potential processing alternatives, including transporting selected ore to Bayan Khundii for processing or constructing a separate flotation processing facility.
At Ulaan, Erdene's September presentation reported completion of a maiden mineral resource estimate and commencement of the mining-license application process. This marks a step toward evaluating the project's potential contribution to the company's broader gold development portfolio; it does not mean that a mining license has been granted.
The company also identified continued copper exploration at Tereg Uul, where it entered an option agreement in the second quarter of 2025 to acquire up to an 80% interest. A maiden drilling program in the second quarter of 2026 intersected anomalous gold and native copper. Erdene's September presentation did not specify a timetable for additional drilling at the property.
Erdene also plans continued greenfield and brownfield exploration throughout the Khundii Minerals District, alongside evaluation of additional acquisition opportunities.
