Drilling Intersects Copper Sulphides and Potassic Alteration

On August 18, 2026, Torr Metals Inc. (TMET:TSX.V)  released an update on its Phase 2 drill program at Bertha North in British Columbia, Canada. The fully funded project has so far completed 1,733 m of drilling of its planned 6,000 m, and the first four holes have confirmed a large porphyry-style hydrothermal system containing native copper, chalcopyrite, and chalcocite. Specifically, hole 26-KO-03 interpreted a "potassium (K)-feldspar-dominant potassic-altered intrusive unit from approximately 425 to 444 m, within a broader ~104 m sericitic alteration envelope" and "copper sulphides appear concentrated along the margins of the potassic-altered intrusive in 26-KO-03, where hydrothermal brecciation and multi-stage veining are also stronger." The hole is at approximately 180 m and is drilling toward a stronger portion of the chargeability anomaly, having already intersected copper at near-surface veins.

Potassic alteration is a feature of porphyry systems that reflects hotter and proximal hydrothermal fluids, and its presence could be a sign that drilling is approaching the magmatic-hydrothermal center where higher concentrations of copper sulphides may be present. Torr argued that this intrusive corridor at Bertha North lies directly within and alongside the margins of a large chargeability anomaly that strengthens, broadens, and remains open at depth.

Hole 26-KO-04 has also shown observed copper sulfides within its altered corridors, and the release stated that "as a regional exploration analogue, the New Afton Cu-Au porphyry deposit in British Columbia hosts strong K-feldspar-dominant potassic alteration within the Cherry Creek monzonite, an intermediate intrusive phase interpreted as the source of heat and metals for the deposit."

Laboratory assays from the first three drill holes remain pending, and petrographic and geochemical work will be required to confirm alteration mineralogy and the significance of mineralization.

"With only three holes completed, we believe we are just beginning to unlock the scale and copper-gold potential of Bertha North," said Malcolm Dorsey, President and CEO of Torr, in the release. "What is particularly exciting is that the geological vectors are strengthening as we advance, with copper sulphides, increasing stockwork veining, and an intrusive phase affected by hotter, more proximal potassic alteration, all pointing us toward the potential center of a large hydrothermal-magmatic system. Hole 4 is already providing further strong encouragement, with native copper and pyrite-chalcopyrite veinlets encountered while still near the outer margin of the chargeability anomaly. With assays pending, a large and strengthening geophysical target still ahead of the drilling, and multiple targets yet to be tested, we believe Bertha North is at a very early stage with significant discovery potential still in front of us."

A Canadian company headquartered in Alberta, Torr Metals is focused on copper and gold discovery potential within proven mining districts throughout Canada.

Copper Demand Rises With Energy and Infrastructure Investment

Demand for copper is expected to rise due to continued use in electronics, especially with the widespread construction of new data centers and defense needs America is experiencing. A report from Businessworld claimed that "global copper demand is gradually shifting towards strategic and less price-sensitive sectors such as AI infrastructure, defense, power grids, and clean energy systems. By 2040, these categories are expected to account for nearly 45% of total copper demand, up from 32% in 2024."

Last year, the looming potential of President Donald Trump's tariffs drove copper prices in the U.S. as American investors stockpiled the metal. This hype created an overstocking of copper, widening the gap between futures and physical worth. "Collectively, inventories at the world's main exchanges have risen by more than 500,000 tons since the start of the year," stated a March 6, 2026, article by Bloomberg NewsTrump's July 30, 2025, proclamation imposed a 50% Section 232 tariff on the copper input value of semi-finished copper and copper-intensive derivative products, effective August 1, 2025. Effective April 6, 2026, a 50% tariff was applied to the full value of semi-finished copper products, which collapsed the COMEX premium. This proclamation contemplated a phased universal duty on refined copper of 15% starting January 1, 2027, rising to 30% in 2028, subject to a presidential determination following the Commerce Department's June 30, 2026, report. Refined copper remains exempt as of August 2026.

On August 18, 2026, copper was trading at US$6.49, with Trading Economics stating that ". . . signs of tightening global copper supply continued to provide a floor for prices, as the metal keeps flowing to the U.S. and China while becoming increasingly scarce elsewhere. Top producer Chile also expects copper production to fall 2.6% this year amid persistent setbacks at mines and development projects."

The metals sector as a whole is showing signs of improvement. On May 7, 2026, Brian Taylor of Recycling Today  said that the World Bank Group has predicted that global metals and minerals prices will rise 17% in 2026, part of a 16% rise across all commodities that would mark the first annual increase since 2022.

Analyst Sees Copper-Gold Discovery Potential in BC

1John Newell of John Newell & Associates gave his opinion on Torr Metals on February 5, 2026, stating that Torr's strategy is "straightforward but disciplined" in its goal to identify and develop large, underexplored copper-gold systems in proven belts. Regarding Torr's project focus, Newell wrote: "Kolos offers both near-term discovery potential and longer-term scalability within a single, consolidated land package."

"Torr offers genuine discovery leverage at a modest valuation," Newell advised, then said, "For investors comfortable with exploration risk and looking for exposure to copper and gold discoveries in proven jurisdictions, Torr Metals remains a Speculative Buy for discovery-focused investors."

Additional Upcoming Drilling and Assays Will Define Mineralization, Scale, and Continuity

According to the company, further assay results for currently completed drilling at the Bertha North target are expected in early September 2026, with ongoing operation updates expected throughout the rest of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a copper-gold porphyry deposit?
A: A copper-gold porphyry deposit is a large mineral system in which copper and gold are distributed through or around intrusive igneous rocks. These deposits can contain extensive zones of lower-grade mineralization along with areas of higher-grade copper and gold.

Q: What is potassic alteration in copper exploration?
A: Potassic alteration occurs when hot, mineral-rich hydrothermal fluids alter rocks near the center of a porphyry system. The presence of minerals such as potassium feldspar can help geologists identify areas that may be closer to the potential source of copper-gold mineralization.

Q: What are copper sulphides?
A: Copper sulphides are minerals containing copper and sulfur and are an important source of copper in many deposits. Common copper sulphide minerals include chalcopyrite, bornite, and chalcocite.

Q: Why is copper demand expected to grow?
A: Copper is widely used in power grids, electronics, electric vehicles, renewable energy infrastructure, and data centers. Growing electricity demand and infrastructure investment are expected to increase demand for copper, while developing new mines can take many years.

Q: What are the next steps after a copper exploration discovery?
A: Exploration companies typically conduct additional drilling, laboratory assays, geological studies, and geophysical work to determine the size, grade, and continuity of mineralization. If results support further development, the project may eventually progress toward a mineral resource estimate and economic studies.
