A gold-silver producer is grabbing investor attention with its new permit acquisition.
Key Takeaways
- Guanajuato Silver Co. Ltd. (GSVR:TSX.V; GSVRF:OTCQX) got drilling permits for its El Horcon project in Jalisco, Mexico, ~60 kilometers (km) northwest of Guanajuato city.
- Permits allow up to 45 drill pads along a 3.7-km trend, covering about a third of Horcon's known structural potential.
- The company plans to drill 5,000 meters (m) in 2026, averaging ~260 m per hole, plus one deeper 500-m hole.
- A drill rig currently working at El Cubo will move to Horcon in August.
- A 2017 historical resource estimate shows 2.0M+ silver-equivalent (AgEq) ounces, though the company notes it isn't current.
- Guanajuato also confirmed it lost its appeal in the NucTech lawsuit, upholding a prior liability ruling.
Drill Rig Moves to Horcon
Guanajuato Silver Company Ltd. announced on August 4, 2026, that it has received formal approval from Mexican government agencies to begin a surface drilling program at its wholly owned El Horcon project in Jalisco, Mexico, which is located approximately 60 km northwest of the city of Guanajuato.
The permits, issued by the Mexican Ministry of the Environment, authorize the company to establish as many as 45 drill pads along a 3.7-km trend, covering approximately one-third of the property's identified structural prospectivity identified at Horcon. Guanajuato Silver plans to drill a total of 5,000 m at the property in 2026 as Phase 1 of its surface program, with holes averaging approximately 260 m in depth. One deeper hole is planned to test mineralization to a depth of 500 m.
To carry out the campaign, Guanajuato will redeploy one of two Nevada-style diamond drill rigs it acquired earlier this year, capable of drilling to 1,000 meters and recovering HQ-diameter core. That rig, currently active at the company's El Cubo mine, is expected to move to Horcon in August. The program is designed to validate and expand the property's historical resource, both laterally and at depth, while building out the company's geological understanding of the numerous en echelon veins present on the property.
Guanajuato purchased El Horcon via its 2022 acquisition of Great Panther's Mexican mining assets. The property spans 7,908 hectares across 17 contiguous mining concessions and is located roughly 60 km northwest of the company's Bolanitos mine. The property's mineralization is dominated by the regional extension of the Veta Madre vein system, consisting of numerous quartz-dominated gold-silver-bearing veins, as well as various base metals.
A historical producer, Horcon has a mining history dating back to the 16th century, with its most recent production in the mid-1900s. Underground workings on the property total approximately five km of tunneling. A 2017 historical inferred resource outlined over 2.0 Moz AgEq from 162,140 tonnes grading 3.44 g/t gold (Au), 76 g/t Ag, 2.69% lead (Pb), and 3.79% zinc (Zn), focused on a 650-m section of the Diamantillo vein to roughly 100 m depth. The press release stated that this estimate is historical and would require further validation, including an updated resource estimate and technical report.
In other news, Guanajuato confirmed that a Mexican appeals court has denied the company's appeal in its legal dispute with NucTech Mexico SA de CV, upholding a prior court ruling holding the company's subsidiary, Minera Mexicana Rosario SA de CV, liable for damages. The company said it will continue evaluating available legal remedies, noting that the associated liability has already been accrued in its financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2025.
Guanajuato is a gold and silver producer focused on mines within central Mexico.
Gold and Silver on an Upward Trend
Junior miners and exploration companies hit the ground running this year after gold rallied at a high of US$5,500 per ounce in January. Many companies chose to begin exploration or production amid these highs. While prices have since fallen, and even dipped below US$4,000 in June, prices are still up 31% compared to August 2025, and Gold.org wrote that: "[T]he stage is set for a possible breakout. On the upside, clear catalysts — a worsening economy or renewed geopolitical shock, a shift towards lower interest-rate expectations, or a wave of dip buying — could reignite gold's momentum and lift it back towards US$4,500/oz or above."
On August 10, 2026, Trading Economics reported that gold prices were trading around US$4,366 per ounce. The article said: " Signs of a softening labor market supported rate futures to reflect more positions of a hold rather than a hike in the Federal Reserve's upcoming rate decision in September . . . Lower energy prices also contributed to softer risks of higher rates for bullion holders. Lesser strikes against Iran by the US were consistent with Washington's rhetoric that a deal with Iran may be reached, driving energy costs to hold below recent peaks."
Silver is up 2.37% over yesterday and trading at US$65.77 per ounce as of August 10, 2026. Higher demand from electric cars, solar panels, data centers, and more is shoring up silver's future demand. Yahoo Finance quoted experts from both BlackRock and J.P. Morgan as saying, "By the end of 2026, experts predict silver's price will surpass US$80 per ounce, and it could reach US$100 per ounce by 2030."
The metals sector as a whole is only showing signs of improvement. On May 7, 2026, Brian Taylor of Recycling Today said that the World Bank Group has predicted that overall global metals prices will rise by 17% in 2026, which would mark the first overall market increase since 2022.
Krauth Sees Significant Silver Potential
On May 27, 2026, Joseph Reagor of Roth reiterated a "Buy" rating for the company but lowered the price target from CA$0.75 to CA$0.70.
Peter Krauth of The Silver Stock Investor wrote about Guanajuato on August 5, 2026, stating that the company's Phase 1 drill program ". . . will improve the company's understanding of Horcon's numerous gold- and silver-bearing vein systems and could significantly enhance the project’s exploration potential."
Regarding Guanajuato's stock, Krauth wrote: "Horcon is still relatively early, but there’s clearly significant silver there, along with gold, lead, and zinc. And the extensive infrastructure means it’s much faster and cheaper to start up. 5,000 meters of drilling will confirm and likely expand the resource. This could be another producing asset before long and add to cash flow, which is another strong reason I own the stock."
Drilling to Test and Potentially Expand Historical Mineralization
Drilling will continue at Horcon in order to confirm or expand the historical resource estimate, which will inform potential production plans.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is a historical mineral resource estimate?
A: A historical mineral resource estimate is an earlier estimate of the amount and grade of mineralization at a property. It may provide useful geological context, but it generally cannot be treated as a current resource until a qualified person verifies the underlying data and, where necessary, updates the estimate to meet current reporting standards.
Q: What is a mineralized vein?
A: A mineralized vein is a fracture or other opening in rock that has been filled by mineral-rich fluids. These fluids can deposit metals such as gold, silver, lead and zinc as they move through the surrounding rock.
Q: What does it mean to expand a mineral resource laterally and at depth?
A: Lateral expansion means demonstrating that mineralization continues farther horizontally along a deposit or vein system. Expansion at depth means identifying mineralization farther below the surface. Drilling in both directions can increase understanding of a deposit's size and geometry.
Q: What is an inferred mineral resource?
A: An inferred mineral resource is a mineral resource category based on limited geological evidence and sampling. It has a lower level of geological confidence than indicated or measured resources, so additional exploration is generally needed to establish greater confidence in the estimate.
Q: What is a structural trend in mineral exploration?
A: A structural trend is a geological feature or pattern, such as a fault, fracture, or series of veins, that extends across an area. These structures can act as pathways for mineral-bearing fluids and may help guide exploration drilling.
