Algo Grande Copper Corp. (ALGR:TSX.V) began drilling Hole 3 at Cerro Grande, targeting a five-horizon skarn system at its Adelita copper project in Sonora, Mexico.

Copper investors interested in upcoming junior miners are taking note of Algo Grande Copper Corp.'s (ALGR:TSX.V)  latest drilling program.

Key Takeaways

  • Algo Grande began drilling Hole 3 at the Cerro Grande skarn target, collared roughly 100 meters (m) along strike from the Phase 1 discovery hole, and planned to drill to 450m depth.
  • The company aims to confirm two historical skarn horizons, extend three newly discovered horizons, and test previously unexplored limestone at its 100%-owned Adelita Project in Sonora, Mexico.
  • Previously completed Phase 1 drilling revealed a stacked, five-horizon skarn system, with discovery hole AG_GC_002 intersecting 41.59m of combined mineralized skarn across five intervals.
  • Hole 2 has advanced to roughly 300m of its planned 700m depth, with core from a previously disclosed mineralized interval now being shipped to ALS Laboratories in Hermosillo.
  • A second, track-mounted drill rig was mobilized to run Hole 3 concurrently with Hole 2, supporting the company's interpretation of a laterally and vertically extensive skarn system.
  • Assay results for Hole 2 are pending, with the company expecting to report them once received and verified.

Second Rig Mobilized for Hole 3

On July 31, 2026, Algo Grande announced the commencement of drilling at Hole AG_CG_PH2_003 (Hole 3) at the Cerro Grande skarn target in the company's 100% owned Adelita project in Sonora, Mexico. This exploration is designed to improve confidence in two historical skarn horizons, test the along-strike extension of three additional horizons discovered during the Q1 2026 Phase 1 drill program, and explore potential undiscovered horizons.

The company noted that Hole 2 (AG_CG_PH2_002) continues to advance and has reached approximately 300 meters of its planned 8,000-meter campaign. According to the press release: "A successful result from Hole 3 would support the company's interpretation of a laterally and vertically extensive skarn system at Cerro Grande with further expansion potential." Core from mineralized intervals in Hole 2 is currently being cut and prepared for shipment to ALS Laboratories to be reviewed and verified.

Cerro Grande's completed Phase 1 drill campaign totaled approximately 2,000m across 4 holes and showed that Hole 2 intersected three previously unknown skarn horizons, alongside two shallower and previously known horizons. All five horizons showed mineralized skarn across five separate, non-contiguous intervals.

These results have led to the Phase 2 program at Hole 3 targeting these five horizons. The two previously known horizons will be explored further to improve geological confidence, while the three newly discovered holes will be tested in hopes of raising the possibility of additional undiscovered horizons. Currently, mineralization has shown copper, silver, and gold.

Algo Grande Copper Corp. is a Canadian exploration company focused on testing overlooked, potentially high-value properties in North America, with current projects centered in Mexico. The company partners with Megaw Exploration Associates (MXA) for operational support.

Copper in Demand Due to Industrial Need

Demand for copper is expected to rise due to continued use in electronics, especially with the widespread construction of new data centers and defense needs America is experiencing. A report from Businessworld claimed that "global copper demand is gradually shifting towards strategic and less price-sensitive sectors such as AI infrastructure, defense, power grids, and clean energy systems. By 2040, these categories are expected to account for nearly 45% of total copper demand, up from 32% in 2024."

Copper has experienced some volatility this year. While a bull market for traders, physical products are trending toward a bear market due to potential tariffs. Last year, the looming potential of President Donald Trump's tariffs surged copper prices in the U.S. as American investors stockpiled the metal.

This hype created an overstocking of copper, widening the gap between futures and physical worth. "Collectively, inventories at the world's main exchanges have risen by more than 500,000 tons since the start of the year," stated a March 6 article by Bloomberg News. The imagined certainty of inaccessible copper due to tariffs evaporated, however, when premiums for U.S. copper futures disappeared, and the tariffs did not materialize. Trump may choose to impose tariffs next year, but analysts and investors are skeptical since his administration chose to forego them in January 2026.

Now, according to Trading Economics on July 31, 2026, "Copper futures climbed above US$6.45 per pound on Friday and were on track to finish the week and the month about 2% and 4% higher, respectively. The gains followed the US Federal Reserve's decision to leave interest rates unchanged this week, easing concerns over the demand outlook for industrial metals."

Moriarty Cites Sonora's Copper Dominance

1Algo Grande grabbed the attention of technical analyst Stewart Thomson on February 17, 2026, where he gave the company a "Speculative Buy" rating, with a short-term price target of CA$1.00 and a long-term price target of CA$6.00. Algo Grande did hit Thomson's short-term price target later in January.

Later, on April 2, 2026, Robert Sinn of Goldfinger argued that the company has "tier-one technical backing", as it is supported by Peter Megaw of MAG Silver and Raymond Jannas of ATEX Resources, who have both been key players in significant exploration projects. Sinn also noted a high-grade copper discovery, the identification of multiple skarns, the discovery of a porphyry upside at depth, and defined expansion targets as investor highlights.

Bob Moriarty wrote about copper demand on June 16, 2026, and discussed Algo Grande's potential role in filling that gap. Moriarty said, "The world needs more copper. A great deal more. Fortunately, Dr. Peter Megaw has been turning up enormous copper deposits across Northern Mexico, with Sonora alone accounting for 80% of the country's copper output . . .  Not many realize it, but Peter is largely behind most of what's advanced in Mexican mining over the past three decades. He committed to Mexico back when the rest of the industry steered clear of it, put off by the country's shortsighted and damaging policies."

"The Adelita copper project is his pet venture. It's now wholly held by Algo Grande, a fledgling company that only acquired Adelita about a year ago. The deal they struck was remarkable — essentially an all-stock arrangement to take 100% of the 5,895-hectare property in Southern Sonora, with only a modest cash component," Moriarty wrote.

Since the acquisition, Moriarty has been watching Algo Grande closely, and he has been impressed. "I'm in love with the story. I had an hour-long call with management a couple of months ago, but held off writing anything until they'd actually launched the pivotal 8,000-meter Phase II work. Phase I offered strong hints of a sizable deposit; Phase II could outline a district-scale copper play. My sense is that most resource investors keep their eyes on gold and silver, both of which have bounced around lately, while copper has quietly climbed to the steepest price ever recorded."

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a skarn deposit?
A: A skarn deposit is a type of mineral deposit formed when hot, mineral-rich fluids from magma react with surrounding limestone or other carbonate rocks. Skarn deposits commonly contain copper, gold, silver, zinc, tungsten, and other valuable metals.

Q: What does it mean when mineralization occurs in multiple horizons?
A: Multiple mineralized horizons are separate layers or zones of mineral-bearing rock encountered at different depths. Finding several horizons can indicate a larger and more complex mineral system with additional exploration potential.

Q: Why do exploration companies drill stepout holes?
A: Stepout holes are drilled away from known mineralization to determine whether a deposit extends farther along strike or at depth. Successful stepout drilling can expand the size of a mineralized system.

Q: Why are drill core samples sent to a laboratory?
A: After drilling, core samples are cut and sent to an independent laboratory for assay testing. The lab measures the concentration of metals in the rock, allowing the company to verify the grade and extent of mineralization.

Q: What are assay results, and why do investors watch them?
A: Assay results report the amount of metals contained in drill or rock samples. They are one of the primary ways exploration companies evaluate drilling success and determine whether additional exploration or resource estimation is warranted.
