"Lara Exploration follows that model of finding projects and joint venturing out the risky exploration phase of discovery. That doesn't always provide the speculative excitement that some investors like in drill-hole plays, but it's a way to build a business, and Lara has done a wonderful job at that—good management and a very diversified project portfolio, most of it in South America. In Brazil, for instance, Lara has Curionópolis (iron oxide copper gold), Canabrava (volcanogenic massive sulphide), Araguaia (nickel), São Lourenço (tin) and Sergipe (potash). The company's range of projects in Peru includes at least a half dozen that are at near the drill stage. They also have a few projects elsewhere, in Columbia and China."

   Brien Lundin, Gold Newsletter (05/25/10)
"Lara Exploration completed 14 of 15 planned diamond drill holes on behalf of its 50%-JV partner Vertical Mineracao at the Curionopolis iron project in Brazil. Lara released results from the first seven drill holes, all of which intercepted significant intervals and grades of iron mineralization starting from surface to depths of about 110 meters down hole. Highlights include Hole 1 (with 10.0 meters of 58.95% iron and 30.0 meters of 48.63% iron), Hole 2 (with 39.0 meters of 62.16% iron) and Hole 3 (with 13.5 meters of 65.05% iron and 35.1 meters of 54.95%).

The JV covers only 1,500 hectares of the property, with Lara controlling the remaining 8,500 hectares, where it has identified several gold-copper targets. These comprise a series of IOCG-type (iron oxide copper gold) veins with artisanal workings. Grab samples of those veins have returned grades as high as 8.4 g/t gold and 31.5% copper. This project, one of many in Lara's stable, is just another reason why this well-managed prospect generator remains a buy in our portfolio."

TGR: You mentioned Latin America. Who do you like down there?

BC: I like Lara Exploration Ltd. I've known Miles Thompson, the president, for quite a while. We worked in Brazil together. Lara is another company that follows the joint-venture model. He's got iron and nickel projects going in Brazil. They have a porphyry copper in Peru that's been taken up by a joint-venture partner. He recently acquired a company that has projects in China, and those Chinese projects are being pushed out to joint venture with other companies. So they're doing quite well. With the iron project, there's the potential that they begin generating revenue from that, an advance royalty payment of sorts. The company may be self-funded in its exploration, which is great.

"I really, really like Lara's management. They are people I trust and know to be extremely competent, which is, sad to say, not so common in this business. They have had some interesting developments, including the deal with Sprott Resource Corp."

TGR: Are there any new up-and-coming projects that intrigue you?

BC: Lots of them. I spend half the year on the road looking at the properties. Nine times out of 10, I come back without buying anything. . .I'll give you one that I own: Lara Exploration Ltd. (TSX-V:LRA). It's a prospect generator run by Miles Thompson. I've known Miles since we were involved with the World Bank valuation of CVRD (NYSE:RIO) in Brazil when it was privatized. He's done some very intelligent joint ventures in Brazil, Venezuela and Peru, and he recently acquired Maxy Gold Corp. (TSXV:MXD), a company with assets in China and Peru.
