"DSK discovered that there's no gold in Fort Knox?"

Business Insider, Courtney Comstock

Dominique Strauss KahnA strange (B.S.) theory is being reported on several (not reputable) websites: DSK was arrested because he discovered that the USA was allegedly stalling in its pledged delivery of 191.3 tons of gold to fund the Special Drawing Rights to start what would become an alternative to reserve currencies.

The first sign that this is nonsense—it also says that DSK discovered that there's no gold in Fort Knox.

The EU Times writes, "A new report prepared for Prime Minister Putin by the Federal Security Service (FSB) says that former International Monetary Fund (IMF) Chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was charged and jailed in the U.S. for sex crimes on May 14, after his discovery that all of the gold held in the United States Bullion Depository located at Fort Knox was 'missing and/or unaccounted' for."

Maybe the writer meant it as a turn of phrase, but obviously, that's complete nonsense.

This is just the latest of a string of weird conspiracy theories about why the former IMF chief was REALLY arrested. He most believable is that he was a front-runner to be Sarkozy's successor as the Prime Minister of France, and Sarkozy wanted to eliminate the threat. Actually, DSK believed something like a "honey trap" might happen weeks before his arrest.

Anyway, the first report of the gold rumor appears to have started on this Russian site (which Google translate won't translate).

Then Economic Voice and later the EU Times picked it up and it took off (though not by anyone reputable) from there.
